Hertfordshire quick off the mark to boost economy

Posted by Richard in Local News, 25th August 2010, 10:41am

Hertfordshire County Council is one of the first local authorities to submit an application to the government to form a Local Enterprise Partnership which aims to boost the county’s business development and economic growth.
The new government has decided to abolish the appointed Regional Development Agencies and, in their place, local councils and businesses are being encouraged to work together to form Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs). Local Enterprise Partnerships will be expected to provide the strategic leadership to create the right environment for business and growth in their area.  The government has invited councils and local businesses to agree the best arrangements for their area.
“The deadline for getting applications to the government is September 6, but we want to be quick off the blocks with Hertfordshire’s proposals to demonstrate how important we feel Local Enterprise Partnerships are in securing economic growth in Hertfordshire,” said Robert Gordon, Leader of Hertfordshire County Council.
“Hertfordshire is already the fifth largest economy in the country (outside London) and is a great place to live and build business. We are extremely ambitious for our economy. Our proposal for a Local Enterprise Partnership has the support of key businesses, of business organisations, academia and local government in the county. It will also give us the basis to create flexible cross-boundary relationships with our neighbours. Already a leading contributor to the UK’s economy, Hertfordshire has the potential to become a truly world-class economy by using its natural advantages on the border of a global city and with a highly skilled workforce. Growth in Hertfordshire will help drive growth in the UK economy as a whole.
